Saturday, June 28th, 2008

Here’s a few photos from another photo session for a Miss Colorado USA competitor. This time it was Savannah that came by the studio for her photos:

The next shot is a crop of the shot above turned to black and white.  I enjoy taking one photo and making it look very different via cropping and/or color changes.

Brittany: A photo session at Cherry Creek State Park

Saturday, May 17th, 2008

Brittany and I went to Cherry Creek State Park to get her some new photos.  Here are some of my favorites.  There was a storm on the horizon that made for a nice contrast to the light we were working in.

Night Portraits in Denver: Meggie

Sunday, May 4th, 2008

Here’s a series of night portraits with Meggie. We started just a bit before dusk and shot well past the point of any remaining sunlight.

Meggie’s look is perfect for that Hollywood Portrait style of photography that I love, reminiscent of celebrity portraits from the 1930’s to 1950’s.

We did get a few shots off before the sunlight was gone.

Denver, Colorado Engagement Photo Session: Shauna and Terry

Saturday, April 12th, 2008

Shana and Terry were in town for the weekend and we took advantage of the time to do their engagement photos in Denver. They will be getting married in the near future in Vail at the Donovan Pavilion. Here are some of my favorite photos from the session:

Engagement Silhoette on the Bridge
I originally shot the above photo as a wide-angle shot featuring the entire bridge with Shauna and Terry in the center of it (for symbolic purposes), and lots of sky and other surroundings in the photo. For this image, I simply cropped it to give a different feel and mood. I love working with different compositions as they provide entirely different moods, meanings, and symbolism.

It would be a shame to walk past a public art piece like this one and not use it in a photo - so we used it.

Vanessa - A Denver Model Portfolio Update

Wednesday, April 2nd, 2008

Vanessa stopped by the other day with an urgent need for some new photos for her model portfolio.  We started with some studio shots and then walked right outside to capture some natural images in the local Southlands environment.  I always enjoy doing model portfolio sessions.  (OK, I guess I could say the same thing about every type of photography that I do.)  We got Vanessa a nice and diverse selection for her portfolio.  Here’s just a couple examples from the outdoor portion of our session:

Tricia and Dave - Engagement Photos in Denver

Sunday, March 9th, 2008

Tricia and Dave’s first met at the church featured in the background of some of the photos featured below. I always enjoy doing photo sessions at locations that are meaningful since it adds a deeper sense of significance to the photos. For this session we started on Pearl Street and then headed on to downtown Denver for more.

Thanks Tricia and Dave! See you soon for the wedding!

Creative, Fun, and Sexy Portraits: Liz

Tuesday, February 19th, 2008

Liz came in for a studio portrait session with the goal of getting some creative, fun, and sexy pictures. Have I mentioned that I love doing creative photo sessions? Well, I love doing creative photo sessions. We ended up with lots of photos I’d love to share, but I’ll keep it to a small sample (for now). Thanks Liz, it was a fun session!

We did this first shot against the red walls of the studio entrance room:

OK… I’m going to stop here for now or this blog post will turn into a complete photo gallery by itself.

Update:  Liz mentioned to me that she has booked a number of modeling jobs thanks to these photos.  While this session was not aimed at building a model portfolio, I’m adding it to the “model portfolios” category of my blog due to her results.

Chillin’ Black Tie at the Cable Center in Denver Colorado

Monday, October 22nd, 2007

I had a blast photographing the Chillin’ Black Tie event for the benefit of the When I Grow Up Foundation. I joined a couple other photographers volunteering a little time photographing this event for an organization that provides career experiences for Colorado’s youth.

Throughout the night there was a group performing incredible dance moves for the entertainment and amazement of everyone. Check it out:

Martine and Richard’s Wedding at the JW Marriott in Denver

Sunday, September 2nd, 2007

Martine and Richard flew in from New York for their wedding at the JW Marriott. It was a blast!

I love to analyze photographs as well as other forms of art. Yes, I even analyze the photographs I take. There are lots of ways to define what makes a good photograph, and that definition will be different to different people. I always prefer the definition that says you can determine how good a photo is with a stopwatch. In other words, how much time do you spend looking at a particular photo, thinking about it, admiring it, etc. The more time you spend looking at a photograph, the more it probably means to you.

Well, this is one of my favorites, at least among those photos I’ve taken. What I love about this photo is the amount of emotion evident. Look at how many faces you can see all with excitement. You can just imagine (or see!) the excitement personally for each individual, and collectively as a group.

Shooting with Beckstead - Workshop

Tuesday, August 21st, 2007

I participated in a fun workshop held by David Beckstead and attended by about a dozen other Denver photographers. We spent the day running around town capturing shots of a few models in various settings. It is always fun working without time constraints just focusing on coming up with something a little different. If you’ve been surfing the websites of other photographers don’t be surprised if these brides look familiar. They were models playing bride for the day. Thanks to Tessa, Jenn, and Krista - especially for putting up with all of us in the intense heat all day!

Here’s one crawling around at Red Rocks.

Kourtney and Justin - Engaged

Saturday, August 11th, 2007

I had a fun time with Kourtney and Justin, taking their engagement photos on Pearl Street and nearby Washington Park in Denver. A couple things stood out to me as I went through their photos: they both have great smiles and the both look incredibly happy all the time.

Renee goes bridal

Thursday, August 2nd, 2007

Renee and Mike were married at the beautiful and “very Colorado” Arrowhead Golf Club. Renee also wanted pictures with some architecture and a bit of fashion style to them (and I love that style too). We headed to Denver to for a post-wedding bridal session to get just that:

Jamie

Saturday, July 14th, 2007

Here’s the results of a fun session in Downtown Denver. A friend (Dale) and I went out to get some fun shots of her daughter Jamie. Thanks Jamie - enjoy!

I love the mood of this shot with the contrasting dark background:

On this one, that green door and Jamie’s red dress against the white wall make an interesting mix:
